Brown Eggs
There is a major difference between eggs purchased at large box super markets where most eggs come from large commercial production facilities, and the ones that come from the happy playful hens at Wunberg Produce. It all starts in the “coop” or as we call it our “Chicken Paradise Palace” with happy, healthy, and free-range hens. Rob and I decided to take an old shed and turn it into the perfect place for a small flock of laying hens. In the fall of 2017, we started the remodel. Paying close attention to a comfortable perch design by adding east windows for lots early morning sunshine, thermostats for temperature control, and two large fans for exhaust and fresh air. Next we added an outside play yard where chickens could go out to play and do all the fun things chickens like to do. This was so important, because these two legged compost makers naturally like to forage, be in fresh air, and bask in bright warm sunshine. It is their natural instinct to forage and scratch in the dirt, eat protein rich insects, and peck at fresh green blades of grass. We needed a play yard where our chickens could feel safe without the threat of predators, so it is fenced. A special dog named “Rosie” nightly circles this area and barks to let the chickens know she is guarding them by scaring potential predators away. Rosie and the pampered birds have a special respect for one another.
We also have a special feed mix that comes from Lake Mills, WI. This is a feed recipe that the Wesenberg family has used for three generations.
Visitors are welcome to visit the “Chicken Palace”. Please note our hens have no fear of people and it is common for the hens to sit down at your feet and shake their wings a bit as to signal you to pick them up for a few pets.
